This is a topic that's been pissing me off for a while. I finally found a way to express it.
I had been in a rut for almost a week, not liking what I was writing, but I had to take a break from marathon writing because I had a fever.... and then, there's yet another shooting, and what do you know, everyone is sending out their "thoughts and prayers"...
The lines I use in the bridge section are taken from news reports of actual shootings that occurred in January of 2016 in the US- thanks to the Parents Against Gun Violence group for putting those quotes together every month.

According to a study using the World Health Organizations 2010 mortality data, comparing the United States with other high income countries, it was found that the gun homicide rate in the US was 25 times higher than in other high income countries.
The studies conclusion - “These results are consistent with the hypothesis that our firearms are killing us rather than protecting us.”
